Age Verification System
Method for verifying the age of TPCs in order to prevent minors from accessing what the community regards as high levels of mature content. We are still looking for a credible 3rd party company that offers this service. Please contact us should you know of such company.

Age Verified Citizen (AVC)
TPCs who have verified their age to be over 18. These citizens are allowed to view MCL 9-10 in addition to MCL 0-8.

Art Polls
Work of Art display page with all the regular features including the artist’s customized question and choices pertinent to that specific work of art. Art Polls broaden the range of feedback to include the silent majority of citizens who view that WoA and do not leave a comment or recommend it but who might be willing to read a question, select the best choice, and press the vote button. It also potentially increases the honesty of the feedback. Poll participants are at the discretion of the artist and can be modified in the options panel. This feature is only available to TPCs.

ArtRemains
A country where freedom of expression and freedom from expression are not mutually exclusive and where citizens decide the quantity and quality of their representatives on a monthly basis.

Avatar
Small symbol that represents individual citizens. Avatars are displayed on the Citizens page and displayed on all of a citizen's pages and comments.
Edited by epiphyte on Jun. 14 2006. Created by epiphyte on Jun. 6 2006
Blocking
A restraining order that can be used at the discretion of every citizen. If you feel that you are being attacked or spammed by any individual you have the option to go to that individual’s page and hit the block button. Blocked citizens are not allowed to comment on anything of yours nor are they allowed to participate in your polls. Citizens who “abuse” this feature by blocking citizens who offer constructive criticism will only be hurting themselves. If you find that you are “unfairly” blocked by a citizen please don’t waste your time complaining about it and instead search for other citizens who appreciate your honesty.

Categories
Method of grouping artwork by similiar techniques, mediums, styles, subjects, time periods, etc. As there is no limit to creative expression there is also no limit to possible categories of artwork. Please click here to help us prioritize category inclusion into our artwork upload process.

Censorship
ArtRemains is firmly against censorship. But until ArtRemains is “legally” recognized as a country, we have to abide by our host nation’s (US) laws. If the US doesn’t allow it, then neither does ArtRemains. If the US prohibits minors from viewing it, then so does ArtRemains. Yet, just because minors are not allowed to view something doesn’t mean we have to prohibit all our artists from uploading or viewing that work of art… which is how we came to develop a system that combines age verification, MCL rating, and customizable MCL filters. Our freedom of expression is directly correlated to your compliance with our laws. For everybody’s sake, please follow the Mature Content Rating Guideline as closely as possible when rating your and other citizen’s works of art.

Filters
There are two filters that are provided for citizen’s protection, a mature content filter and a bad word filter. The first filter allows citizens to choose for themselves how much mature content they view. Not only does this include art but it also includes forum threads and blogs. In order to prevent minors from viewing content that the US government says they shouldn’t, freeriders only have MCL 0-6 available to customize while TPCs have MCL 0-8 available and AVCs have MCL 0-10 available. The second filter allows all citizens to input offensive words and input their inoffensive substitutes. The beauty of customizable filters is that they only effect what you see while leaving the content unchanged for other artists. This allows for a highly dynamic country where artists of widely diverse backgrounds and sensibilities can freely browse and interact within their comfort level. Another benefit is that citizens can customize their filters to reflect their environment… from the privacy of the home to the local library to the college computer center. The bad word filter is currently disabled due to resulting in excessive CPU drain.

The Art Forum categories include: Discuss/Share, Exchange, Bid, Garbage Bin.

Freeriders
Slang for citizens who don’t pay taxes. In actuality, any citizen who has referred family or friends, advertised for ArtRemains by creating links to their gallery on other sites, made helpful suggestions, uploaded traffic generating content, or voted… has contributed in some way. Nonetheless, freeriders only have 1 vote, view ads, have a 3 mb max upload file size, are only able to view MCL 0-6 and are not able to create polls.

Google Adsense
Google AdSense is a fast and easy way for website publishers of all sizes to display relevant Google ads on their website's content pages and earn money. Because the ads are related to what your visitors are looking for on your site — or matched to the characteristics and interests of the visitors your content attracts — you'll finally have a way to both monetize and enhance your content pages. It's also a way for website publishers to provide Google web and site search to their visitors, and to earn money by displaying Google ads on the search results pages.

Write better ads, strengthen your marketing initiatives, and create higher-converting websites. Google Analytics is free to all advertisers, publishers, and site owners.

Groups
Formed by Leaders so that citizens with common interests can associate together. Associations are not only a very important way to gain social capital but they are also very important because individuals in the minority are better able to defend their rights if they combine their voices and resources. Groups also form the core of ArtRemains governmental structure. For example, citizen led groups are in charge of deciding which banner ads we display and which charities we will donate to.

Jail
This is where Leaders send citizens who have twice broken a law in the Constitution. There are several reasons for publicizing who was incarcerated, why they were incarcerated, who incarcerated them and how long they will be incarcerated for. The first reason is for transparency which will be a strong incentive to help prevent Leaders from abusing their power. The second reason is so that other citizens will learn about the laws. The third reason is that publicity might be a strong enough deterrent to prevent citizens from committing the crime in the first place. The fourth reason is that it will allow citizens to help identify poorly written or vague laws and offer suggestions on how they could be better worded or made clearer. Upon incarceration citizens are automatically sent a message asking if they wish a public trial. While incarcerated citizens are only allowed to upload art and block citizens. If they were incarcerated due to art they uploaded then they lose that privilege as well.

Mature Content Level (MCL)
MCL 0 = no mature content and MCL 10 = maximum mature content. All citizens are allowed to MCL rate all the art, blogs, and threads that are visible to them. Citizens can change their rating of an object at any time by clicking on the MCL square. Freeriders are allowed to view MCL 0-6, TPCs are allowed to view 0-8, and AVCs are allowed to view MCL 0-10. Your MCL settings are found in the filter section of "My Settings" and you can check or uncheck any of the MCL boxes available to you. The first person who rates the art, blog or thread is the person who uploads the art or creates the blog or thread and from then on the weighted average of the ratings determines the MCL of that art, blog or thread. It is very important that you defend your checked MCLs by MCL rating art, blogs or threads that you feel are inappropriate for the levels you are viewing. This will help protect minors and conservative citizens as well as tourists.

MCL Place-cards
This option allows citizens to view place-cards instead of empty space. If you view MCLs 5-10 and browse through an artist’s gallery without having your MCL place-card option checked you wouldn’t see anything if that gallery only contained works of art rated MCL 4 and below. But if you have your MCL place-card option checked you will see MCL place-cards in place of those works of art. If you click on a place-card thumbnail it will take you to it’s WoA display page where you will be able to see everything that’s on a normal WoA display page except the art will be hidden and the MCL rating will be disabled.

Page Rank
Page Rank is Google’s measure of importance (0-10) of a web page. Google uses Page Rank to determine how to sort search results. You can download the Google Toolbar to quickly discover the page rank of any page. The Search by John Battelle offers scholarly citations as the conceptual basis behind page rank. Supposedly there is a positive correlation between a paper’s importance and the quantity of times that paper has been cited by other papers. I cite the book The Search in this document and the more people that also site this book the greater its importance. Yet, not only is the quantity taken into account but so is the quality (importance) of the citing papers. Therefore, it's more valuable to be linked to from a page rank 4 page than a page rank 1 page. The relevance is that the higher the page rank of the page your artwork is displayed on, the higher you will be placed in Google search results... assuming the search terms match the text on your page.

So in a sense, all our artists our also curators. In order to recommend a citizen's artwork you click on the artwork's thumbnail and then click "+ Recommend" which is displayed directly beneath the artwork.

Subscribe
Subscriptions (+ Subscribe) offer web feeds (RSS) that both tourists and citizens can subscribe to. Citizens of ArtRemains have two main feeds...a feed for their artwork and a feed for their recommendations. When tourists or citizens subscribe to their feeds they will receive notifications when the citizens they are subscribed to upload new artwork or when they recommend new artwork. The notification consists of artwork thumbnails delivered to the subscriber's feed reader. In order to easily subscribe it's helpful to have the latest version of firefox or explorer.

Syndicate
This web syndication feature increases exposure for citizens by allowing both tourists and citizens to display thumbnails of artwork on other websites and/or blogs. The thumbnails are linked to the artwork display page and help promote the syndicated artist. The thumbnails are displayed and automatically updated using a simple code that can be copied and pasted into any website or blog that allows script. The number of displayed thumbnails or font size can be adjusted by modifying the n=2 and the f=13..."n" stands for number and "f" stands for font.

For example, when I copy and paste this script...

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://artremains.com/Main/ArtSyn.aspx?n=2&f=13"></script>

into here... the result is:

Weighted Votes
The founder has 10 votes, Leaders have 6 votes, developers have 5 votes, TPCs have 3 votes and freeriders have 1 vote. This weighted vote system allows Leaders to represent the interests of citizens and TPCs to have extra influence due to providing financial support to ArtRemains. It also deters citizens from creating more than one account (against the Constitution) in order to unfairly influence voting outcomes.
